What is Check 21?
Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act, or Check 21, was implemented to reduce fraud and keep your account information secure by producing a digital image of a check, called a "substitute check". A substitute check has the ability to be processed electronically. The law is effective October 28, 2004.
You need to make sure you have sufficient funds available in your account before you write checks.
KSCFCU has no plans at this time to produce substitute checks, however, if we receive a returned substitute check (for reasons such as insufficient funds or stopped payment) the affected account holder will receive the Consumer Awareness Disclosure along with the original returned substitute check. The disclosure examines substitute checks and your rights.
One important factor with Check 21 is that checks you write may no longer be transported physically to complete the payment cycle. This will shorten the time it takes for a check to clear your account. You need to make sure you have sufficient funds available in your account before you write checks.
